Phoenix Sky Harbor airport is one of the fastest growing in the USA and is well connected to domestic US locations. Currently there is only one direct air link to destinations outside of the Amercas. This is provided by the 6 days a week non stop service provided by British Airways from London Heathrow terminal 5. This service also allows easy connections to BA destinations in continental Europe.
British Airways Service
British Airways flies to and from Phoenix daily with the exception of Wednesdays. A Boeing 747-400 is operated on the route and the flight time from London is generally around 10 hours and 30 minutes with the return trip usually being around an hour shorter. The outbound flight BA289 leaves London early afternoon arriving into Phoenix late afternoon. The return flight BA288 leaves Phoenix in the early evening arriving into London early afternoon.
Fares obviously vary with the time of year, but this is a well used service in all seasons so last minute reservations are never being to a good idea.
The aircraft is configured with 4 classes of service.
Economy – A good basic product especially now that all seats are provided with on demand entertainment. Seat pitch is comparable to other airlines and the rest of the service is of a good standard.
Premium Economy – A small separate cabin that provides more legroom and wider seats. The catering has recently been significantly enhanced with passengers being offered a choice of business class meals.
Club World – This is the BA business class product. All seats recline flat to provide a bed for the night. One point to be aware when it comes to seat selection is that window seats face backwards. A number of the business class seats are situated on the upper deck and I’d recommend this as it provides a nice restful environment. With some advance planning a significant saving on the cost of a business class ticket can be made by booking in advance and foregoing the flexibility to change flights.
First – For the ultimate in comfort this is the way to go. Personal space is significantly better than even business class with each seat having direct aisle access and a cocooned environment. Food and in particular wine are of a higher standard. Needless to say if you can stretch to this I’d recommend it.
For passengers from the UK the other alternative is an indirect routing usually transferring to a Us domestic flight at one of the east cost gateways such as New York. This will probably be cheaper that the direct option but the journey time will be much longer. Do not underestimate how long a 5 hour domestic flight from New York will feel after you have completed the hop from London.
