Phoenix and Scottsdale have a thriving and dynamic restaurant scene with frequent new openings even in a recession. Of course all the major chains are present but there also a number of places that are in our view worth seeking out. These are our personal opinions only and if you want to find up to date reviews these are best found on Tripadvisor or your favourite restaurant review site.
Blow Out on steak
Mastro’s Cityhall Scottsdale
Mastro’s is one of my favourite steak houses anywhere and I’ve been to a few. Of the steaks I particularly recommend the ribeye chop, but make sure you bring your appetite. Aside from the steaks there are also a good range of appetisers (including some seafood offerings) and some fish entrees. To accompany the main dishes as wide choice of potato and vegetable side dishes are available. The wine list carries a broad selection of US wines.
Whatever you do be sure and sample the extra hot horseradish.
Pizza for Theatre Organ Enthusiasts
Organ Stop Pizza just has to be unique. As the name implies the restaurant houses a full blown Wurlitzer theatre organ built for the Denver cinema in 1927. Every evening an organist plays the organ from a console on a stage in the restaurant. The ranks of pipes that make up the organ are visible at the rear of the restaurant. The menu is focussed on pizza but a selection of appetisers and pasta dishes are also offered. Service is fast food style with orders being placed at the counter. You then wait for your order number to appear on a electronic indicator board and collect your food.
Have a look on youtube and you’ll find the organ in action.
Traditional Cowboy Steak
One of the specialities of the South West is the cowboy steak. Grilling over an open flame and often using mesquite wood gives a great flavour. Steaks are commonly served with a choice of potatoes and cowboy beans. Porterhouse and T-Bone are the most popular cuts. Expect also to dine accompanied by some live traditional country music. To sample all of this the following two locations are good choices.
Pinnacle Peak Patio
Situated in the North East of Scottsdale this restaurant offers extensive outdoor seating and there is also a micro brewery on site.
Not only a restaurant but also a themed western town, Rawhide provides a number of attractions. These include, stuntmen giving wild west shoot out shows, burro rides, horse rides and a mechanical bull. This does get busy so there may be a short wait before you can get a table for dinner. The location is South of Sky Harbor adjacent to the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort.
